Dear friends,

I need advice quick, I have a co-worker, a fallen away Catholic who doesn’t seem to like the church too much anymore, she is now a bible Christian(fundamentalist), and her dad is still Catholic and is dating an Assembly of God woman, her dad was on the phone with her his daughter(my co-worker) and said he needs counseling from her because he and his girlfriend are arguing about religion and so my co-worker is going to try to talk her dad out of the Catholic Church, she kept saying they could go to an in between church and I said no, he can’t because there is no in between church, there isn’t a church like the Catholic church because the protestants do not have the sacraments so that is not ok. Then she started saying how confession is between her and Jesus, and I said Christ instituted the sacrament of confession and pointed out John where He said who sins you forgive are forgive, etc… and she said a priest is no different than her, I disagreed again and said they have the apostolic succession and yes they are different and she said she can confes to anyone(I also pointed that Jesus said to confess to one another and that’s when she said she can confess to anyone), besides trying to talk to her is there a book you could recommend I could give to her to read before she talks her dad out of being a Catholic. A book she would be open to, I thought about Rome Sweet Home by Scott Hahn, what do you think of that one for giving to her or do you think something else would be better?

Thanks and God Bless,
Kaily

At the momenty, talking to her should not be a priority. Talk to your DAD.

Since she is a fundamentalist, I would recommend Karl Keating’s Catholicism and Fundamentalism. It does a wonderful job illustrating the differences between the two, and defending the Church as well.

More Christianity by Dwight Longnecker-

He was a fundamental Christian pastor turned Anglican, now Catholic. He does a good job of explaining how “Mere Christianity” is not enough without insulting or offending.

It is a really good and easy read.

Hope that helps…
