I have a few question I am hoping someone on the forum could help me with:


  1. *]Daily Mass Scripture reading: On 19 October 2004 the scripture readings were as follows:

    First Reading: Ephesians 2:12-22
    Psalm:85:9-13
    Gospel: Luke 12:35-38

    But when I watched the Mass on EWTN the reading was different. They read Matthew 28 instead of Luke and I believe they replaced Ephesians with a passage from Corinthians. I am trying to figure out why the change and are deviations from the daily reading schedule a common thing and are the Priest free to choose a different text if they so desire?

    1. *]Daily Missal: Can you explain what A Daily Missal is and how it works? Could you recommend which one I should purchase?

Hi Tsrk,

Excellent observation. Be not alarmed.

October 19 is the OPTIONAL feast day of St. Paul of the Cross.

On optional feast days there are also an optional 1st and 2nd reading along with a different gospel reading.

EWTN choose to celebrate the optional readings thats all.

Can you help with my questions related to the Missal?

I found the following Missal on the Internet for sale:

Daily Roman Missal, 1st Printing of the 6th Edition
Standard Print, Bonded Leather

Since I am clueless:) I don’t know if this is the one I should purchase or should look elsewhere.

I am not familiar with this Missal, but I have only used St Joseph Missals for many years, but I’m sure there are other good ones.

The first things you look for in any Catholic publication are the Imprimatur & Nihil Obstat—the permission for printing by the Bishops.

You can also ask your parish priest, if you want personal assurance.

Thanks suz for the info. Your suggestion to speak with my parish priest would be great if I was a catholic 🙂 but I am not. I am putting much effort into studying Catholicism. I am reading the Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma by Dr. Ludwig Ott, I have finished reading the Catechism and “We believe”… A Survey of the Catholic Faith.

There are still some things I have questions about. The missal is one such thing. I have a basic idea of what a missal is but not completely sure of what is in one. I feel that by getting one I can have a better idea of Catholic worship. I just want to ensure I don’t waste my money when I purchase one. I know some of my questions may be very elementary to the life long catholic but I hope everyone will be patient with me 🙂
 
I couldn’t leave home without *Magnificat. *It comes out monthly and has daily Mass readings, short offices of Morning and Evening Prayer plus Night Prayer, and it has pithy little daily meditations. Very rich resource.

Magnificat is a great resource. I received a free copy in the mail about 3.5 years ago and have been a subscriber ever since.

Its a good purchase…especially at that price…go for it if u can…
it might NOT contain the optional reading for optional feast day or it might , im not sure. But its a great aid for the mass with all the prayers and rubrics.

Since you mentioned some of your course of research, may I recommend “Rome Sweet Home” by Scott & Kimberly Hahn and “The Lamb’s Supper” by Scott Hahn.

The first is a personal account of conversion to the Catholic Faith by a presbyterian minister (now one of the RCC’s brightest scholars) and the second is a popular elaboration of the very subject he was researching that led him to the Church. I realize your intent is probably not conversion but this book and “The Lamb’s Supper” gave this cradle-catholic great insite into my own faith. They will give you insite to our faith as well.

And don’t let the light reading fool you.Dr. Hahn’s works could fill a large bookcase and include strict academic treatises as well as his popular writings…
