So I have a situation where a close family member has basically abandoned the church due to the loss of their spouse. It has been some time since this happened - maybe 30 years. I’ve only recently come to understand and try to live my faith, so it wasn’t until the past few years that I even worried about this.
I’ve tried talking to another family member about this, and urging that we really need to proactively address this soon - the person is not 24 anymore, in fact they’re closer to 94. I got a little resistance in the form of “oh God would never abandon…”
I think the Church’s position is basically that if you know the truth of Christ and His church, and then openly reject it, you’re in serious trouble. I’ve expressed that, and advised that we both consult the catechism, and develop a “plan of attack.” I’m still getting a reluctant response.
What is the church’s official position on this type of situation? Where can I turn to find some concrete information on the what and why’s of the Church’s teaching? Any advice on how to begin the process of changing this person’s mind and heart? I know prayer and the catechism can’t hurt, but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
