Hey,

I do some things in Church with high schoolers, and I’m trying to get back in touch with like the things that they are around.

I know that sexually suggestive clothing is one thing that is popular. That’s not new, it was like that when I was in school, but probably not to the extent that it is now.

So I read this article, and some interesting propositions were made:
"I KNOW WHAT BOYS WANT"They’re blatantly sexual, occasionally clever and often loaded with double meanings, forcing school administrators and other students to read provocations stripped across the chest, such as “YES, BUT NOT WITH U!,” “YOUR BOYFRIEND IS A GOOD KISSER” and “TWO BOYS FOR EVERY GIRL.” Such T-shirts also are emblematic of the kind of sleazy-chic culture some teenagers now inhabit
The T-shirts, which school officials say are racier than ever, are posing dress-code dilemmas on Washington area campuses… sexually suggestive T-shirts often fall into a gray area that requires officials to evaluate one shirt at a time.
The T-shirts highlight a paradox about this generation: Even as more teenagers absorb ubiquitous sexual messages, federal data show that they report having less sex than their predecessors.
Although a recent National Center for Health Statistics survey found that more than half of all teenagers engage in oral sex, teen pregnancy rates have plummeted since the early 1990s. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the percentage of high school students who reported having sexual intercourse dropped from 54 percent in 1991 to 47 percent in 2005.
What do some of you think? Do the youth just wear these clothes to be popular and rebellious, and not necessarily to display who they really are on the inside?
"We have so many dress codes or whatever, so the T-shirts are like us rebelling against the teachers and principals because we can’t wear what we want," said Ashli, 17, a junior at Eleanor Roosevelt, in Greenbelt, who said she does not want to have sex until she is married. "I think most girls and boys get the T-shirts because they’re funny and they draw attention to you. I don’t really care what guys say."
That girl (Ashli) ended up gettting the shirt “I KNOW WHAT BOYS WANT”… she said she has shoes that go with it.

There is a thread on children’s clothing in Moral theology.
Also one on what do men find immodest.
Also one one what do women find immodest.

The information is something that can be shared mostly with young people. Take a look.

I think that sometimes young women are much more innocent then they are given credit for. I can remember, being 19 or 20, and going up a guy’s room and being surprised that he wanted sex.

I also wore clothing that was tight and provacative. Yes, I wanted to attract men but I didn’t really understand that I was getting the attention of men with whom I would regret attracting.

This is probably why father’s are so important in a girl’s relationship. If you trust your dad then you will listen to his opinion.

I agree with this entire post! I think that young women understand and enjoy that they have power over the men in their vicinity, but I don’t know that all of them understand the consequences. And shame on their parents for not doing their duty!

OTOH, this is nothing new. 14 years ago when I started high school, the school board had to pass measures to ban spaghetti straps, midriff-baring tops, and those awful “Co-ed Naked” sports shirts with the suggestive sayings. When my mother was in high school (class of 1970), the girls wore skirts so short that I cannot even comprehend how they moved in them.

The best dress code is school uniforms.
Yes! As long as they are modest and relatively stylish.

But it’s easy for me to be an advocate of school uniforms, I’m sort of a small guy, and so my clothing style choices were somewhat limited when I was in school.

Not to mention, I didn’t really develop a sense of “fashion” or style until late college. Poor me!!

My High School has uniforms. Got them last year. Oxford shirts and pants for the guys, kilts for the girls. Golf shirts are also available.

Incidently, a wek after the uniforms were brought in, the school administration banned male students from loitering in the stairwells.

I have seen these racy t-shirts for sale in places like Hollister or Urban Outfitters, but I have never actually seen anyone wear one — ever. I wonder why they even sell them.
