Hello All,

I hope you are all having a fine and wonderful evening (at least it’s evening where I am at). I am currently going through the marriage preparation process (very early stages, mainly just filling out the affidavit’s still, so we haven’t gotten into the meat of anything yet), and I found myself contemplating my faith. I’ve always taken my faith somewhat seriously, although it has felt lately that due to adversity and some bickering in my family about the timing of my pending marriage, I have come to appreciate the beauty and intricacy of my faith even more than usual. Instead of busying myself with worrying about the arguments, I keep contemplating the beauty of the sacraments we have available, and I keep wondering how I can give back, and make sure that my wedding is focused on the right thing- God.

My church is small, and very simple. What it has is nice, but I’d like to offer something for adorning the church, not for making my marriage the center of attention, but between me and God to say thank you. I just can’t get over how beautiful it all is and how blessed we all are. I was thinking about an appropriate tapestry/banner for the season or a nice alter linen. I did a search, and there are so many different types of alter linens, vestments, and other things in the church with names I have never heard of before. Trying to search a history of it all left me wondering if the sites I had were valid and accurate, but the undercurrent I got was that the Church’s history is very intricate with little traditions meant to enrich and give glory to God. I also know that these traditions stem partially from the laity and partially from the ecclesiastical orders. I’m not sure how much cross-over there is, and I’m sure that most people do not busy themselves worrying about dressing their church’s priest for mass. But still, I think that on special occasions it would be nice to do something extra for the church.

I suppose I’m just wondering that if there were guidelines for this, what would they be? Since I don’t know much about it myself I don’t want to overstep my bounds or go crazy with it. And I’m slightly curious if anyone else has felt this urge for their wedding, or if they were more concerned with flowers an pew bows and other traditional wedding stuff.

One last thing I’m curious about is the idea of adding adoration somewhere into the ceremony (preceding or after). Honestly, I feel that adoration would give me that time with God to really fully understand and come to the idea that something has changed, and again, say thank you and spend that time with God as well as my fiance.

These are just thoughts that have been gently knocking around in my head that I thought I would share.

Go see your pastor and ask his advise. There may be something that he is aware of that could also satisfy your desire to do something beautiful for your church. a lot depends on his feelings about church decor. Is he a modernist or does he lean for more traditional things?

God Bless.

My pastor has been ordained for about 10 years, but our church is the first church he’s ever called his own, so it’s hard to say his preferences. He has fixed up a lot of the older portions of the church, but I can’t say he has one distinct style. The main/new religious icons/items he has brought it was a new, more ornate monstrance and a very large, nice rosary display in the parish hall. Thank you for the advice 🙂 I should ask him his preferences.
