History buffs most likely to become Catholic?

Yep! I have a BA in History and I started Inquiry Classes in the Catholic Church over 10 years ago. I’m just NOW going through RCIA! I’ve believed that if I am going to be Christian then I must be Catholic. My only other options are to be Jewish or Agnostic. I played the Agnostic/Unitarian game for several years because I just couldn’t bring myself to become Catholic or Jewish. I could no longer stand the spiritual state I was in and finally sucumbed.

I’m not AS scared as I was but I still have some fears, mainly what the heck is everyone going to think? I’m finally to the point though that it matters MUCH more what God thinks than my human family or friends and am mentally prepared for rejection as well as the wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Nonsense! Have you ever read any of the great saints’ writings? They are filled to capacity with Scripture. So is the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

If the Catholic Church hadn’t compiled into one canon the books of the Bible, and preserved it through some of the darkest years of human history, you wouldn’t have it in your hands to read.

The Bible is the Catholic Church’s book. In reality, you, as a non-Catholic, have no business telling the Church what any of it means. The Bible isn’t yours–it’s OURS.

I like to study how the Bible was cannonized, what books were included, and how the early Catholic Church debated the cannon till 397.
I tell this to my friends and they tell me: “Just accept it as God’s Word, and don’t question anything about it.”

I do accept the Bible as the inerrant word of God, but I still like to dig into the history of it.

Some of my evangelical friends find it almost heresy to even study how the Bible came about!
I get blank stares when I start talking about Cannon disputes and pre Bible Christianity. Almost like, "you better not go any further, Jason, you just might lose your salvation!


Which leads me to my point. The history of the Bible would lead someone to become Roman Catholic, because early Church fathers gave us the final lists, and by separating from that Church we are disobeying them, and most importantly, Christ.

Also, we have family members who would really lose it if we joined the RCC. **

There is nothing wrong w/ digging into the history of hte Bible. Anytime we research anything for the truth, we will find God. He is perfect and can’t lie.

I think you should post what I bolded nearly every week in a thread. I think that if us cradle Catholics better understood where you were coming from we could be better ambassadors for Christ and His Church. For our failings, please forgive us as we know not what we do. For our strengths, thank God as they are a gift from Jesus Christ.

P.S. Allischalmers, I forgive you for your false accusation. Unfortunately, I don’t have the power to forgive your sin against God and violation of the 9th commandment.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled thread:
The saddest part of the opening post, is that most of us Cradle Catholics don’t have a clue about Church History, it’s just you converts!!!

I’d love to find a way to get everyone at our church to attend RCIA every 5-10 years and do SOMETHING to learn more about their faith. We’ve gotten a handful to begin (though they’re mostly kicking and screaming along the way) but it does seem to be building.

not pinched toes… just disbelief…

like i said, one of the first things that got me interested
in the Catholic church was history…

but, one of the biggest things that made me convert was the bible… and trying to justify my protestant beliefs, with what the
bible said…
