Hi,

I was wondering if any of you know how Pope John Paul II decided on the Luminous Mysteries?

Was there an earlier tradition of praying them?
Had he been developing the idea for a long time?
Why those five in particular?
Was there any opposition to the idea?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, as I will be giving a talk on the Luminous Mysteries and would like to give some background info as well.

Well, some people don’t like that the 5 new mysteries disrupt the relationship between the Rosary and the Breviary’s Psalms (Psalter of David). There are 150 psalms and 150 Hail Marys in the traditional Rosary.
Others object to them because Our Lady of Fatima said to say 1/3rd of the Rosary every day ie 50 Hail Marys. (There are 150 Hail Marys in the full traditional Rosary of 15 decades so 50 Hail Marys = 1/3.) If you were to add the 4 Luminous Mysteries you have 200 Hail Marys or 20 decades in the full Rosary. When this is divided by 1/3 you get 66.6 Hail Marys and some people object to the number.

Some people who don’t like to say the Luminous Mysteries as part of the Rosary do pray them as a chaplet.

I quite like them because the traditional mysteries do leave a big gap between Christ’s early life and his Passion. The Luminous Mysteries, by covering Christ’s ministry, provide a more balanced encapsulation of the significant moments in Jesus’ and Mary’s life.

Before the Luminous Mysteries if you were to pray a complete Rosary (Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious) there were actually 153 Hail Marys and not 150 (don’t forget the 3 Hail Marys after the Our Father) and some say the 153 represents the number of fish caught by Peter and some disciples after Jesus told them to cast the net over the right side of the boat. This was after the resurrection and Peter and the rest did not recognise Jesus.
John 21:11 “So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of 153 large fish.”

it works good for the days. There are 7 days in a week and each of the traditional 3 mysteries gets an equal amount now. Therefore there is one leftover day for the new lumionus mysteries. You can make just as many arguments as to why there are good and benefit the rosary as to why they are not beneficial.

I love the Luminous mysteries. The tradition of the rosary didnt start out with 150 (153?) Hail Marys so I dont see a problem with the addition of new mysteries.

Remember we are called to obedience. If the pope has given us a new (and most beautiful) set of mysteries we would do well to follow them.

I think they are the most spiritually deep of all the mysteries. Much better for meditation for me.

In Christ.

Can you provide a reference to this? What did the Rosary start out as?

Yes, we are called to obedience but that does not apply to this. The Rosary is a private devotion. The Holy Father did not mandate that those who pray the Rosary use these Mysteries, he just added them.

That’s true - there are all sorts of additions and interpolations with the Rosary. The ‘oh my Jesus’ prayer, for example, was added after the apparitions at Fatima in 1917. Some people add extra prayers at the end (usually the St Michael Prayer or the Memorare). Others don’t use the original mysteries either, and simply meditate on whichever biblical or other events/passages/points for pondering appeal to them.

I think the extra 3 Hail Marys are for the three Gospel canticles recited as part of the Divine Office: Zachary’s Benedictus; BVM’s Magnificat; and Simeon’s Nunc Dimittis

I was a little uncomfortable at the time the Luminous Mysteries were suggested because it was the year of the Rosary; but instead of simply honoring, promoting, etc. the Holy Rosary, and addition/change was made. Kind of like when someone says: “I really like you, but…”

Just a personal quibble.
