There is nothing in the rubrics for the Mass that calls for the holding of hands nor is there an option for it. Therefore no one should be compelled to hold hands with another. If family members or friends want to do so among themselves its not the end of the world, but it should never be something that other people in the congregation feel compelled to do.
The Mass is the liturgy of worship of the entire Church, it is not our personal expression to tinker with at our own whims.
