Has anyone done or know anyone who has done the distance learning program at Holy Apostles College? I am thinking about doing the masters program there in theology or philosophy but I havent found out much information on it. Anything about curriculum/accredidation/reputation/etc.

Thanks.

Hello ST!

Are you talking about Holy Apostle Seminary in Connecticut ? I know people in the past who went to this seminary and they all said that their teaching is very solid (very orthodox) and many older semenarians prefer to study at Holy Apostle.

hi there, Kevjohn here, does anyone know anything about this now?
Many thanks, Kevjohn

I’ve heard nothing but wonderful things about this Seminary/College. It is among the few top totally Orthodox Seminaries.

Soooo glad you started this thread, ST100! I just finished an MS in Exercise Science in July, and am starting the MA Theology at Holy Apostles the 29th of this month. I live in a rural area of California, and I am thrilled that Holy Apostles has this program. I can tell you a little bit so far, which you may already know most of if you’ve spent a little time on their website:

Holy Apostles is regionally accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, which is the oldest of the six US regional accreditation bodies. Regional accreditation means that all classes in the MA program, including Distance Learning, count for academic transfer and equivalency as well as admission into PhD programs, just like courses from other regionally accredited colleges and universities- Harvard, Yale, U Mass, BC, U Conn, etc, etc. Holy Apostles is also a Newman Society approved college, which means the Newman Society considers the curriculum to be Ex Corde Ecclesiae, “from the heart of the Church.” Most of the colleges and universities on this list are smaller and have an academic focus that is rigorously Catholic. Schools not on the list are the big schools such as Notre Dame, Holy Cross, Marquette, Fordham, etc. etc.

When applying, one chooses an area of concentration from the following: Bioethics, Church History, Dogmatic Theology, Liturgy, Moral Theology, Philosophical Theology, or Sacred Scripture I chose Sacred Scripture, since that seems so fundamental to me.

One will need to choose a local church official or professor proctor one’s final exams. The final questions for the entire program are given to the new MA student up front. Since I already know what the MA final examination questions are, I’m assuming that they are expecting very detailed and thorough responses.

One can complete a thesis, if planning to go on for a doctoral degree. That’s my current plan, but who knows? Where ever God takes me! Maybe to the seminary in my ripe old age, or into a monastic order. Whatever the path, I’m sure that what I learn from this MA program will help me enormously.

There is also a dedicated website for Holy Apostles Theology and Philosophy students: www.deadphilosopherssociety.com

Oh, and the cost is among the lowest I’ve seen, around $300 per credit. Even the textbooks and materials, which are ordered through a Holy Apostles-dedicated Amazon account, seem to be extremely reasonable. This is important to me, as I’m not in a high income job (substitute teaching) and I’m continuing on a Stafford loan.

I’m excited- can’t wait! And God bless you, ST100, and guide you on your journey!

LOL I just realized you started this thread 4 years ago, ST100. So where areyou on your journey now, anyway?

I was just thinking, that there might be others here who are attending or have attended Holy Apostles. If so, please come and share your experiences!

I know several priests who have attended this Seminary. This Seminary has been said that it is the most orthodox of the seminaries in the country. It is very faithful to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, and surprisingly the priests who have made a great impact in my life and others, have attended this Seminary.

I would recommend it hands down. I am a firm supporter of this Seminary. It is a much needed light in a country that has so many seminaries that are not faithful to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.

God bless.

It was a wonderful seminary; but not too long ago, I thought I read that it changed hands or something like that…I really have no up to date info. Yes, do continue to enquire about it. May the Holy Spirit guide & bless you in your studies!

According to the website, www.holyapostles.com, the last major administrative change was when three of the Connecticut bishops joined the board of trustees; the Bishop of Norwich is now the Chancellor of the college. But that was in the early 80’s.

At any rate, I’m excited for the start of my first term. Now just to decide which classes to take. I have to take Philosophy for Theologians and a core course, probably Synoptic Gospels. But I can only take one elective. Mary Mariology, or maybe the course on Angels, Demons…and Exorcism? I’m like a kid in a candy store!

I will begin at Holy Apostles in January through their distance program. let me know how the course work is. I hope you are enjoying your first semester!

Congratulations Kerri! I think you have made a great choice. The professors are a blend of PhDs and doctorate-level priests, and my three courses were top knotch. And the price per unit is among the lowest!

Do you have to take Philosophy for Theologians, or do you have the undergraduate philosophy prep all squared away? Either way, you are going to love the freedom and the intellectual challenge. I hope to have you in some classes, no doubt will because HACS is small (and that’s a good thing!).

btw I’ve been encouraged to become a priest in my old age, lol. One of the encouragers is our parish RCIA educator. Holy Apostles is one of the few seminaries in the US that takes guys over 50. I’m still…mullin’
