Recently I went to a wedding of a Catholic man and an Episcopal woman in an Episcopal church. I was toild beforehand that a Catholic priest who is a friend of the groom would be at the Church to bless the marriage and give out Holy Communion to the Catholics who were in attendance. Was he allowed to do this? I was under the impression that he would be distributing the Body and Blood of Christ to the Catholics in attendance but it looked to me as if he concelebrated the Episcopal service. I any case was he allowed to give aout either Catholic or Episcopal communion? Thanks. John Behan

N-O, No. Good grief, what a serious abuse!

If the Catholic priest said the words of consecration then the Communion would have been valid, but definitely illicit. I can’t imagine he had permission from his bishop to concelebrate an Episcopal communion service. He should only have been there to witness the couple’s wedding vows and nothing else.

It is not allowed for a Catholic priest and an Episcopal “priest” to jointly celebrate a Mass.
