Holy Communion Question

Heh there friends,
This week I any told a lie (not a lie of any consequence but still a lie) and I feel guilty. I also missed confession through no fault of my own. Does this mean that I should hold off on receiving Communion until I receive forgiveness? Also, if I am currently in a state or mortal sin, is there anything I can do to avoid hell until such time as I can receive forgiveness?

Arrive early for Mass and ask Father to hear your confession, or, ask him after Mass tomorrow. Make a good act of contrition and pray.

You stated “not a lie of any consequence”…so wouldn’t that be a venial sin? A lie of great consequence would be a mortal sin. If you are in doubt, then wait to discuss it with the priest.

We should avoid all venial sins, but they should not keep us from the Eucharist.

True. If I can see him before mass, he might sort me out. Hope so:) Thanks for the advice.

It was not a lie of consequence in that no one suffered any dire consequences as a result of the lie, but I still fear that it might be a mortal sin. Specifically, I covered for a friend who was having a rough time emotionally by getting her the day off work on a false excuse. I don’t know if it qualifies as mortal or venal.

It probably depends on the situation and your boss’ relationship with your coworkers. Sometimes you get into these bizarre situations where your boss actually wants to be lied to. I’ve had a boss ask me once why I didn’t just call in sick when I had a family emergency that wasn’t technically in our list of reasons to be off from work. Most bosses understand that sometimes things come up and while officially, they can’t let you off the hook because your mom’s kitten had to be put down, they do understand if you file it under “bereivement of a family memeber”. Now, if it’s a situation where your friend has been abusing the privilege, that’s another story. Best thing to do is confess it at your next opportunity.
 
Is lying a sin? As kids we are taught that the Commandments say lying is breaking a Commandment and is therefore a sin. But really looking at the Commandments and some of the other Torah laws the sin of ‘bearing false witness against thy neighbor’ only refers to lying in a court of law to get someone in trouble for something they didn’t do.

you lied but I wouldn’t say you sinned.
