When was the last time you actually read the ninth chapter of John? You’re still mixing up your bible stories.

As for the blind man being told to go wash (once, not seven times), that was the only option he had – to do what Jesus told him to do. When it comes to earning plenary indulgences, we have several options to choose from. If I choose to stay home and do thirty minutes of serious Bible reading (one of the options) rather than do a pilgrimage and walk through a special door, that’s my choice. To criticize my choice or not to criticize it is your choice, but if you choose to criticize it, that says more about you and your choices than it does about me and mine.

Mostly, I was criticizing your choice of the word “silly”, but if that’s how it seems to you, I can do no more than to offer why I do not think it so. And if I’m wrong about my Bible reference, it wouldn’t be the first time. Looks like I’ve got some reading to do. Oh well, thanks for indulging me in the pleasure of this conversation anyway .

Yes, I have passed through two holy doors and plan to do more.

However, I don’t seek them out unless I plan to participate in the other indulgence works.

Confession, communion, prayer with intentions for the pope, and complete detachment from sin (you do not accept any sin even though you are imperfect)

I believe acts of mercy and eucharistic adoration may also count. I haven’t read my copy of Manual of Indulgences yet.

I recommend going as often as you can for yourself and the faithful departed.

I think many Catholics do not see the value of penances and indulgences because of Protestant ideas and a general lack of fear of judgement and the real possibility of hell. I try to go to confession frequently and feel I have availed myself to many graces that my Protestant friends reject. Mary was full of grace and I am still far from being there. Thank you Pope Francis for opening this door of grace. Work out your salvation in fear and trembling.
