Holy Father set to discuss greater freedom of the TLM

ROMA, February 6, 2006 – For the morning of Monday, February 13, Benedict XVI has scheduled a meeting of the cardinal prefects of the Vatican congregations in order to decide two questions: the lifting of the sentence of excommunication against the followers of archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, and the widening of the permission to celebrate the Mass in Latin according to the rite established by the Council of Trent.

I will wait for the offical statment from the Holy Father and the Vatican…

After all, it was widely reported that the Synod of Bishops at the Vatican not longer ago was going to come out with a universal Indult (oxymoron) which never surfaced.
 
I agree. And one still doesn’t know what this “greater freedom” will entail.
 
Listening in on the blogosphere got my hopes up a little, but even if the Pope’s “cabinet meeting” happens, I’m almost positive that he’s not going to reconcile the SSPX without being asked to, and the statements coming out of those bishops since THEIR most recent meeting show no signs of that happening. They are convinced, in their great wisdom, that the situation will be resolved by Rome becoming reconciled to them, no vice versa. Go figure. I still pray, however, that we are making strides toward unity.
 
I don’t like to brush aside the question of the SSPX, but I think allowing a greater freedom for the TLM would be a good idea in any event. Like others here, though, I will wait for B16’s official word on this.

Not picking one you GWS but could someone please define “greater freedom” and how it will be done?

The only way I can see for it to happen is for the Holy Father to smack every single bishop in the face and mandate a none dogmatic/doctrinal change within the bishops diocese.

Seems everyone assumes that where an Indult Mass is not offered that the bishop is holding it back. Could it be that the resouces for it are not there? It takes money and people and time to do this. The cost for the space, the cost for the priests involved, not to mention limiting their avalibility to serve other Masses in the diocese.

It just seems to me that it takes more than just waiting an Indult Mass to pull it off.
