I read this article from Inside the Vatican that talked about the Holy Grail in Valencia, Spain in the Cathedral? That can’t be right. I thought the Holy Grail was taken from Jesus, and translated into heaven during his agony in the garden. This does not sound right to me.

Here’s an article that lists several possible locations, including Valencia, Genoa, Constantinople, and (really) Maryland. Go about halfway down and look for the heading that reads “four medieval relics.” The paragraph above it is interesting as well.

Ignatius Press also has a book on the subject. Here’s the press release.

This is fascinating. I had no idea that this was out there.

What!?!?!

I think that’s taking the statement “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will.” a little too literally! The cup he spoke of was the cup of suffering, and it WASNT taken from him. He drank more deeply from it than anyone else ever has or ever will.

The Holy Grail would not be taken into heaven. Only Jesus and Mary have been assumed into heaven physically. The Holy Grail is generally believed in the Catholic tradition predominating today to be the Relic of the Chalice of the Last Supper in Valencia.

Of course “Holy Grail” is an often vague and nebulous idea in the Western folklore and literary tradition. It does not always mean the “Holy Chalice” but can also be a stone that fell from heaven, or some item (like a “macguffin”) whose real identity is not important except that the journey to find it drives the story.

Oh COME ON! I thought **EVERYBODY **knew the truth of the Holy Grail!!!

The truth lies in the cave of Caerbannog, wherein, carved in mystic runes upon the very living rock, the last words of Olfin Bedwere of Rheged make plain the last resting place of the most Holy Grail.

Those who venture within (braving the rabbit and the beast) will discover that Joseph of Arimathea testified that the Grail may be found in the Castle Aaagh. Of course, you must cross the Bridge of Death to get there. It helps to know about swallows (especially African and European varieties), but, of course, only kings are expected to know these things.

Thank you Tim the Enchanter 👍 It also helps to know, when crossing the Gorge of Eternal Peril, that one’s favourite colour is in fact yellow and not blue, which was the favourite colour of the first knight to cross the Gorge only. And once you get to castle Aagh of course you’ll find it staffed with silly French kniggits armed with their deadly taunts as weapons. 😃

Be careful David. You know too much! Prepare yourself for the… Spanish Inquistion!

I just finished read Janice Bennett’s extremely well-documented book, St. Laurence & the Holy Grail. She gives the fascinating history of the Cup of Valencia and how it was sent by St. Laurence, a deacon to Pope Sixtus (martyred 3 days previous to St. Laurence), to Spain (Valencia was Laurence’s birthplace) for protection from the Roman authorities who were demanding that all the treasures of the Church be turned over to them. Originally the Cup was in Huesca, Spain, his parents’ hometown (they also were martyred in Italy), and then over the years was kept in safety in various monasteries in northern Spain. After the Romans, the concern turned to protecting the cup from the Moors. Eventually the Cup (similar to other stone cups of the same period of Our Lord’s life on earth) came to be housed in the Cathedral of Valencia where it remains today. Read the book! 🙂
