Does anyone remember how we celebrated Holy Saturday before all the changes were made? I seem to remember that it may have been in late afternoon or early evening. Just curious as I’m a senior and seemed to me it was less elaborate.

There are two distinct time periods to consider. Holy Week was reformed in 1955, when the Vigil was moved to the appropriate time; until then it was anticipated on Holy Saturday morning. After 1970 of course, the new Mass of Paul VI was introduced that produced further changes.

This is just a very high-level summary. I was born in 1958 so only have the vaguest memories of the pre-1970 Mass. As a kid we always went to the Easter Morning Mass, never the Vigil.

This year for the first time in ages I’m not going to the Vigil as I was up at 4:30 am to drive an hour to where our schola was singing Holy Saturday Lauds.
