After Holy Thursday Mass our priest, servers, knights of columbus processed around the church until he reached one of the side altars. My question is why he carried the blessed sacrament in the cimborum rather than exposed in the monstrance? I’ve seen it done both ways. Just curious if there’s a “rule” or is is local custom?

The rubrics for Holy Thursday specifically call for the ciborium. This procession is intended to call to mind the Lord’s burial, and as such, having the Host exposed in the monstrance would be inappropriate.

The transfer of the Sacrament on Holy Thursday is for the custody of the hosts for the next day’s communion. It does not call for the lord’s burial, nor the place of reposition should be called a “tomb.”

This is exactly how it is phrased in the Missal for the rite.

It is an altar of repose where the sacrament is reserved. So exposition would be out of place.
