Holy Water Blessing For Children

Dear All:

I have a Scott Hahn tape (who doesn’t) where he recommends blessing your children with holy water at bed time. So, I went to EBay and bought a holy water sprinkler. Does anyone out there know a short blessing that I can use on the kids?? I plan on doing this shortly before bed time or after they are in bed, but before they are asleep - not sure yet. I have other bedtime traditions that I did after they were asleep. Not exactly sure how this one will go yet. Also, I wouldn’t mind if the blessing was in Latin even - that might be kind of cool. Short, sweet and to the point.

Our tradition is to put a sign of the cross on the forehead and say “May God bless you and keep you”.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray. When i’m putting my 6 month daughter to bed i do the same and also say Guardian Angel Prayer.

Do you think it might frighten him as he grows older, as in, he might think he’s going to die in his sleep?

I like to bless my daughter after she’s fallen asleep, but I often forget I definitely want to have a prayer/blessing routine as she grows older and can participate.

I guess it might. But that would give me the opportunity to further catechize about death and the grace of God. Sleep is like practicing for death so maybe if I start him now, when the time comes, he’ll be more than ready.

Just a follow up on this topic… I think that I am going to use the following that I got from the Priest that married me and my wife…

Bless these/this children/child, Lord, so that they/he/she may remain firm in Your peace and persevere in Your will. May they/he/she live a long life and have a good family of their own some day, and finally arrive at the kingdom of heaven through Christ our Lord.
