I may be going nuts, but it seems that when I lived in OK and been to Mass during Lent in other places the Holy Water fonts were dry. Here in MO I asked our Priest if they weren’t supposed to by dry and he said “No”. Am I off my nut?

You’re not off your nut, apparently the priests in OK were off theirs. The holy water fonts are supposed to be dry during the Easter Triduum, but a lot of churches have extended that through Lent. Your new parish seems to be doing things the right way.

Hopefully not yours father joe

Haha! 😃 I’ve seen a lot of different varations around here with holy water being present during Lent. It seems some parishes do it, others don’t.

We attend Holy Trinity in Marshfield. I’m not trying to get anyone in hot water (no pun intended). My wife is pretty sure that the fonts were dry in OK also, so either we are both remembering correctly or both wrong.

I live in OK. Our Holy Water fonts are full through out lent. However, during from Holy Thursday until the Easter vigil they are dry.
What parish in OK???

During various years we’ve attended St.Rose of Lima, Watonga, closed for a time, Sacred Heart, Hitchcock until Arch-Bishop Beltran closed it permanently, and St. Anthony, Okeene. Still visit St. Mary’s in Clinton occationally as Fr. Carl, my favourite Priest, is there now.

You are defintiely NOT off your nut!

I read a quote from Cardinal Arinze that this practice is a definite no-no; we are not to deny access to sacraments or sacramentals just because it’s Lent. Lenten Scripture is full of water references. And it lessens the significance of the Dry fonts for the Triduum.

BTW, our parish not only empties the fonts, but doesn’t have baptisms in Lent:( .

When I asked Father about it over her in MO he did say that no Baptisms are performed during Lent. Thank-you

The two churches I go to, St. John the Baptist and St Joseph (they are part of a “cluster” of three parishes) in Schenectady NY actually have sand in the fonts and the baptismal fonts are drained. I would assume the same is true at the third church in the cluster, Scred Heart/St. Columba.

The fonts in the Italian and Polish (St. Anthony’s and St. Adalbert’s) parishes are still wet.

Btw, welcome Fr. Joe!!

Our pastor stopped the Holy water for Lent and then in great humility this past weekend restored it. He said that he was sorry and that this practice was reserved for the Triduum. Like Rodney King once said, Can’t we all just get along."

The church where I attend uses sand, also, I have always wondered if we were to use this in the place of water when putting on the sign of the cross. Is using sand during lent appropriate?

I walked into church through a side door last night for Stations and the holy water font by that door was dry. I about freaked out about liturgical abuse when I realized that all the other ones were filled…😊 😃

This is the way I know it to be - only from Holy Thursday (or Good Friday - guess I don’t notice too well) until Easter vigil. Right now, holy water is available in fonts.
