🙂 Hi everyone,

I read somewhere that the traditional Latin prayer the priest says over water…to make it holy water…includes exorcism. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_water Does anyone know if this has been changed with Vatican II, and if this prayer is still said in churches that have Tridentine Mass?

thanks 🙂

God bless

I’d just add, I think you should capitalize the H in Holy water. Just my humble understanding…

oki 🙂 no prob.

does anyone know about the prayer?

God bless

Sorry to go into your thread again! 🙂 But be patient, I know it will be answered soon enough. Most people are here during the week and not the weekends, I am the opposite.

The Blessing of Holy Water in the New Missal does pray that wherever the blessed water and salt be sprinkled that the power of evil be defeated, but it is nowhere near as beautiful or in depth as the traditional blessing, imo.

There is a whole link about this topic. If you do a search you should find it. I will post it if I find it first.

**Update: **I knew it was somewhere. This is the link.

for the short answer, most priests who say the EF Mass would probably use the blessing from the old rite as well, although there is no guarantee.

For instance at my church, the Priest blesses it with the old prayers, but if I were to approach him any other day, he would probably use the new prayers.

If you wanted some, you could request that it be blessed using the old prayers, and I bet most priests would oblige, assuming you or he had salt around

I took bottled water and salt to my priest. He did the ‘old rite’ blessings/exorcism over both and I walked away with what he called ‘more Holy Water than we’d use in a cathedral in a year’.
I’ve given a good deal away to friends/relatives who have expressed need of it recently.
