Pax et Bonum! I am in need of an answer please and thankyou - I was once told that Holy Water that is aged, is not useful anymore - as if it has gone bad. I am referring to the Holy Water that has been blessed with salt in it. I really didn’t accept this at all, believing once it is blessed and in the bottle, or font, it remains as Holy Water. In fact I know people who simply add more Holy Water or plain water to the Holy Water bottle when it is getting low.
So, my question is - do you think the Holy Water can go bad or dormant? I still don’t…angeltime:signofcross:

Depending on the amount of salt, it might go “bad” in the sense of not being safe for human consumption. I’ve had it develop a green tinge if I don’t use it as quickly as I normally do. It typically doesn’t matter, but I’m not going to use green tinged holy water to bless food, for instance.

I have no idea what you mean by “dormant.”

Pax et Bonum! Thankyou for your response. Spiritually speaking, I don’t think it goes bad and perhaps I need to change my wording - I don’t think it loses its power…as for dormant - by that I meant slowly losing its power…is that clearer? God bless, angeltime:signofcross:

I suspect that what you are remembering hearing about holy water “going bad” is simply in reference to the fact that a container of water can stagnate over time. It doesn’t mean it’s no longer holy water. It just means you might want to get rid of it and get some fresh holy water.

Honestly, I’ve never had that happen. I still have holy water bottles that we filled from my daughter’s Baptism 10 years ago. It still looks perfectly fine—no discoloration. I don’t think I’d venture to drink it, though. 😛

Holy Water is not meant for drinking so it doesn’t really matter if it goes stagnant.

As for topping up Holy Water it remains Holy Water as long the original Holy Water is more than 50% in the container.

I’ve always had some question about “topping up Holy Water.” So does this mean that when one does this, the water mixes with the Holy Water and then it becomes equally Holy Water? Can they do this multiple times? How would one ever know how much of the original Holy Water was present? Or, when one “tops up the Holy Water” does it become diluted Holy Water? When I was a volunteer in prison ministry years ago, I was curious as to why the jar of holy water was always full. It turned out that one of the inmates who assisted with setting up was always “topping off” the holy water because she read somewhere one could do this. But after we learned what was happening, the priest made sure to bless the water thereafter.

That is what I was taught.

The number of times you top up does not matter as long as the original Holy Water in the container remains above 50%.

Pax! I think it means 50% of the bottle is still full when topped up (added to) so still 1/2 full. I am not sure I agree with that, because I think it is about the blessing and power not the measurements. ??angeltime
 
I guess the question is what constitutes original holy water.

Does original refer to the water from the font?
Or does it refer to prior to the last topping?

Example.

Susie gets 10 gallons of holy water. She uses 5 gallons. Now she tops it off with 5 gallons of regular water. So that’s 5 gallons of font water plus 5 gallons of tap water for 10 gallons of holy water because it’s 50%.

I think from what has been said, we can all agree that it’s holy water.

Now let’s say Susie uses another 5 gallons. She again tops it off with 5 gallons of water. Now there’s 25% original font water, 25% holy water from the prior topping off, and 50% tap water.

Does the second time still constitute 10 gallons of holy water because there’s 50% holy water prior to topping off? Or is it no longer holy water because there’s only 25% left from the original font water?
