Here in the Philippines, Holy week is one of the, if not the most anticipated time of the year by devout catholics.
One of the many practices that is somehow peculiar in the Philippines is the Procession of the “Pasos”, a wheeled carriage featuring a solitary image (during holy week, it features an image of a saint who played an important role in the passion narratives e.g. Mary Magdalene, Peter, John, Mary of James, Joanna, the Sorrowful Mother, Salome etc.) or a tableau depicting a biblical scene, donned with fresh flowers and illuminated with bright lights. “Paso” means* “to step forward”* in Spanish. The climax of the said procession is the "Paso" featuring the image of the Dead Christ enclosed in a coffin called “calandra”.
Here are some pictures taken by a friend of mine, Louie Nacorda that captures the beauty of the pasos from Baliuag, Bulacan, Philippines. Baliuag is known for its line-up of more than 80 pasos.
