Feature: Home Churches

While home groups sponsored by churches are nothing new, there are an increasing number of independent groups not affiliated with any particular church that meet regularly. Many of these groups are looking for alternative ways to explore their faith in smaller, more intimate settings. Lucky Severson visits with members of home church groups for a look at how they are seeking – and finding – new spiritual connections. According to Cecilia Schulte, a life-long Catholic who started her own home group, “I wasn’t finding … all of what I needed by attending mass or just following ritual. We’re spiritual beings, and that means exploring and changing and growing. And I felt inhibited in a traditional church setting.”

SEVERSON: They say they’re not delving into one religion so much as exploring spirituality through many kinds of theologies
This is a very disturbing trend the catholic has dropped holy mother church altogether because she doesn’t want to deal with fear of judgement. Hey that can be a good thing. The Bible says the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
But hey these people want a feel good christiantiy a Jesus that cast no opinion or judgement on sin.Well you can make up your Jesus into whatever image you cast him into but that is not the Jesus we find in church tradition or the holy scripture he is most merciful and most just he can forgive any sin but hates sin. You don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. That is what is going on here.

I have heard of these type of “churches”. They are called Cell Churches and are the ultimate conclusion of the protestant revolt where everyone is their own pope.

Home based groups (like Scripture study and Prayer groups) are acceptable only if they follow the teachings of the Church. Anything that resembles liturgical celebrations are not accreptable.

Isn’t every family supposed to create a ‘home church’? I see a ‘home church’ as an extension of a particular church, not in opposition with it but in full agreement with it. This is where the cathechisis takes place - in home. It is really hard to learn about the faith from either CCD, chatholic school or Sunday mass. The teaching should be reinforced and explaind at home.

That is not the dispute here my onw church has home church get togethers and study groups and so forth. What is happening here is that the entire church structure not only the building but her sacrametns the priest etc are beling replaced by such groups they are replacing the church not supplementing the church.
THe early house churches had presbyter (priests) and a mass these churchs just have a private interpretation of the Bible.
