Is it a mortal sin to cheat on homework?

I had to write a few paragraphs in my Spanish class and I used a translator for most of the assignment.

Is this a mortal sin.

I don’t know but I’d recommend at least that you study your lessons enough to know that the version you have is compatible with your own class’s usage. If you’ve read stuff that translators have brought from other languages you probably agree with me that it can sound a bit awkward from the standpoint of a native speaker. There is a good chance your teacher will be able to tell you used a translator for at least part of it, because for example it will word something in a way that you haven’t learned yet.

And if you do that much diligence in the study, that does a lot to give you the advantage of the assignment that the teacher would have you do, so if you lost some advantage you can regain it. 👍

I wish you well!

I can speak and read Spanish perfectly, my only problem is writing. I did notice the errors that the translator made and I corrected them myself.

Yes, cheating is sinful.

Whether the particular instance you describe was a mortal sin for you, given your circumstances, is unknowable to us on the internet. I can only recommend you confess this, and ask for guidance from your priest in discerning if it were mortal or not.

Did the teacher specifically say that you could not use a translator? Did he give some other ground rules for the assignment? Yes, if you have broken the ground rules, it is cheating and wrong. However, if not, then you might ask the teacher if you could use a translator, or simply write down on the bottom of the paper that the assignment was completed with the assistance of a translator.

That is part of playing the game. I'm in an engineering program. I have never seen someone complete an engineering assignment with out a solutions manual, or old exams ect.

Don't talk yourself into being guilty. The entire existence of school is a series of smoke and mirrors. I have friends that go to Medical School, that use old exams for every test. Some of them are doing residency right now, so the whole myth of,
" You wont learn anything" that you need to know on the job; is a lie.

I’m using a solutions manual right now for an assignment as I post this online.
all I had to do is Google the questions.

.

I used to be like you, until I realized that in a class of 200 people graded on a curve, the honest student is the one who fails. I’ve been to trade school as well, for welding and industrial mechanics. So I understand the difference, between having to pass exams, and learn a job. University trains you to hack your way through life not learn a job. At 900 dollars a class and debt. The sad part is, so much of your quality of life depends on it.

It is a sin, but not a mortal sin; do your own work. You are not in school to learn how to use a translator; you are there to learn Spanish with your own brain. In the end, you are cheating yourself.
