A conference entitled “Doesn’t everyone have 2 Mommies/Daddies?” is being held at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts on 10/11/05. This conference is about understanding the cultural aspects of daily life for same gender parents. I work with an openly gay man and he and his “husband” are both giving presentations at this conference. They are the parents of two adopted developmentally disabled children. He’s a very caring person and I have no doubt that he’s a good parent but my concern is that a well-known Catholic college in this state is hosting this conference - isn’t this openly a dissention from Catholic teaching? What do other people think about this.

I have two friends that went to Assumption College. They ended up leaving the Catholic faith to become evangelicals because of such things as the Jesuit priests wearing rainbow pins (in support of gay rights) on their collars. I was very sad when I heard this was among the reasons they left. So I do not doubt that Assumption College would have this seminar.

Wow. That saddens me to think that there are people who are more anti-homosexual than they are committed to the Church and its teachings.

Christ taught us that we should love our neighbors as ourselves. This includes gay and lesbian persons. We may believe that homosexuality is wrong - but that doesn’t mean that we should turn our back on homosexuals.

The conference, as described by Riley259, is for gay couples who have children. These are people who are deep into their lives. And there are children involved.

I think it is right for us, as Catholics, to want to promote the welfare of people, especially children. Pray for them if you would like - I certainly will be!

I don’t think they are anti-homosexual. They are just re-affirming the Church’s teachings. Approving the conference at a Catholic college would mean affirming that the homosexual behavior is accepted. Last I looked, the Church’s position hasn’t changed.

Yes, Christ taught us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Sometimes our neighbor takes the wrong path and if we love them, we will correct and help them, even if it pains us to do so.
