A relative had been married for more than 20 years. His wife left him for a female ‘friend’. Would this be a valid reason to seek an annulment?

That cannot be determined by anyone here. It’s not a “yes” or “no” question.

It certainly *could *be, if it were a factor at the time the vows were exchanged. For example, in the case of fraud or deception. But, 20 years is a long time. This may not be something that goes back to the beginning of the marriage. In other words, the marriage could have been contracted validly and in good faith by both parties. Or not.

We can’t make such a judgment.

So, it would take a full tribunal investigation and interview of witnesses to make such a determination. The person who desires a petition for a decree of nullity needs to make an appointment with their priest.

What happens after a marriage takes place is not relevant for puposes of annulments. It is what is known prior to the marriage that is taken into account.

What happens after the marriage takes place can be relevant if it points to the problem that existed at the time of the marriage.

not by itself no, but it may shed light on the situation that pertained at the time of the original contract, so yes that is definitely something he should include in his interview. He needs to see is own priest, assuming he already is civilly divorced and there is no possibility of reconciliation, and get things started and get answers that apply to his specific situation.
