Feanaro's Wife:
It comes down to degrees of “wedgieness” for me:D .

One pair of underwear is going to be a whole lot more material stuffed up there than another. LOL.

Yes, this is a very personal question…one I wouldn’t feel comfortable asking good, modest, catholic women (embarassment!!). :hmmm:
I say, if you’re not buying them for sinful reasons, and if it’s modest (i.e-nobody can see anything they shouldn’t be seeing because of it), then go for it! I’ve been in a similar situation, but not with thongs (just not…a “Christina-thing-to-do” ;)).

Hey Guys…

Malia, you’re awesome!!

Ha… As for the rest of you  just kidding!

But yeah… Honestly… I have a VERY hard time talking about anything …well… you know… with anyone in person. So this way it’s easier.

Like Malia said, this should not be our only source (heck no!!)
and I think that we should all be smart enough, and Catechism armed, to reject and accept certain things… even if we do not like to hear them.

Amen?

besides,
Where could you find this question in the Catechism? 😛

Your intentions seem to be in the right place, and I give you another 👍 for attempting them. I’ve NEVER thought them comfortable.

Modesty is about how you carry yourself and present yourself to others. As long as you dress so people observe you as a person and not just as a body you should be fine. Then whatever you wear (or don’t wear) under your clothes is up to you.

We could next discuss fabric choice, colors (is red okay?) or the acceptability of sheer or lace. Just kidding!

If thongs are wrong - don’t wear them and consider it a sacrifice to be uncomfortable in your clothes! Who said we are “suppose to be” comfortable all the time! How many Saints wore woolen shirts or cinched scratchy ropes about themselves to offer their discomfort for the spiritual aid of another? A true Catholic life is not about comfort.
?!?!

Anyway…for all of you who have not subscribed to the Opus Dei regimen…yet still want an alternative to this dilema…have you ever tried the boys’-cut women’s briefs? They are actually quite cute & flirty if you have an athletic figure (those of us w/husbands DO consider this when it comes to undergarments), give full coverage, show no lines and are quite comfortable. Shall I also dare mention they are worlds better than a thong when it comes to being out on the town trying on clothing?!

Where does it say in the Catechism that you are supposed to get your answers by polling CAF?

Last I checked the Vatican hadn’t weighed in on the pressing topic of thongs vs. bikinis vs. briefs. 😉

Hmm, DaVinci Code? It is a practice that was common amogst many saints, so you could call it the Catholic regimen instead.

The practical reasons to wear underpants –
  • to protect delicate skin from irritation from seams/fabrics of clothing
  • a layer of protection for the clothing from perspiration, body fluids, and such
  • to provide extra coverage for modesty’s sake
For the life of me, those are all of the practical reasons to put on underpants I can come up with. Perhaps extra warmth or for support (for those of us with some extra ounces to hide) –

And this 40 year old brain of mine just can’t see how thongs can function to meet any of the above requirements. I also look perplexed when anyone says three teeny straps are in any way comfortable – and I have tried them (apparently, I just did not develop the required callouses  ).

My final bit of rant, again – in 40 years of dressing, the only time underpants have “ridden up” into a “wedgie” on me were when they did not fit properly or were not well made.

This thread makes me feel old – but, heck – I still own a half slip so maybe I am J

CCC 2526 on teachers of the young:
“Those in charge of education can reasonably be expected to give young people instruction respectful of truth, the qualities of the hearts, and the moral and spiritual dignity of man.”

From canon law:
Can. 774 ß1 The care for catechesis, under the direction of lawful ecclesiastical authority, extends to all members of the Church, to each according to his or her role.

ß2 Before all others, parents are bound to form their children, by word and example, in faith and in christian living. The same obligation binds godparents and those who take the place of parents

Again, CAF is not under the direction of lawful ecclesiastical authority - there are non-Catholics on this forum voicing their opinions.

CCC on Modesty: 1832, 2521-24

Most noted 2522, “It keeps silence or reserve where there is evident risk of unhealthy curiosity. It is discreet.”

How many men do you think are on CAF? Sure, everyone here may be “safe” from embarrassment airing questions in anonymity but how “modest” is talking so openly about your underclothing in a forum that also includes men??

Historical Note before the 1800’s this topic would have been irrelevant!

Don’t say you feel old!!! You are just being practical. Thongs do nothing more than give the illusion of being a garment… your post reminds me of the story about the Emperor’s New Clothes.

But among the crowds a little child suddenly gasped out, “But he hasn’t got anything on.” And the people began to whisper to one another what the child had said. “He hasn’t got anything on.” “There’s a little child saying he hasn’t got anything on.” Till everyone was saying, “But he hasn’t got anything on.” The Emperor himself had the uncomfortable feeling that what they were whispering was only too true. “But I will have to go through with the procession,” he said to himself.

So he drew himself up and walked boldly on holding his head higher than before, and the courtiers held on to the train that wasn’t there at all. Hans Christian Andersen

Uh…no, but thanks for asking. Check out ODAN (Opus Dei Awarenenss Network) for any further information you may need and Opus Dei maintains its own website where this topic is addressed as well.
ODAN is one of the worst sources of information you can find. Kind of like going to Catholics pro Choice for info on abortion.
Anyways, its a thing many Catholic saints have done so, before Opus Dei even existed, so rather than calling it an OD regimen, you should call it a Catholic regimen if you wish to use the term of regimen to depict this practice.
