Honor your father and mother

Part of honoring your father and mother is to obey them, right? What happens if they tell you to do something immoral? Are you forced to sin either way? Do you disobey them in favor of not committing the sin? Do you commit the sin, and your parents take the blame?

You know,that is a hard question.I was on another thread with you earlier and if this is about,parents forcing their kids to have an abortion,I would be in rebellion against the demand of my earthly parents,and would follow my heavenly parents. St.Francis denounced his earthly father and said his only Father is the Heavenly Father.I would have to do the same.God Bless

Our parents are supposed to be our spiritual teachers…

it is NOT a sin to disobey your parents if they tell you to do something immoral. You are not honoring your parents if you allow them to fall into sin.

Our duty to honor our father and mother ends when they stop obeying the Heavenly Father.

my six year old sister asked this same question at lunch today, the answer we came up with was that we have to obey our heavenly parents more, and as long as what our earthly parents says agrees with that, we are bound to obey, but when they conflict, we are obliged to obey God, no matter what.

I agree with this. Well done.
I will add to it a bit.
You must obey God even when your earthly parents tell you to do something different. Even when what your parents tell you is moral. For example if you have a religous vocation you must follow it even if your parents don’t want you to.
However, I thnk this should only apply to adult children. Minor children must obey their parents (unless the parents requirements are sinfull).

The duty to honor them does not end when they tell you to do something sinful. We must always honor our parents. Our parent’s duty is to lead us to Heaven. If they were telling us to do something that is sinful, then we’d be honoring them by disobeying the sinful command.

the obligation to honor and obey parents, and by extension all lawful earthly authority is not absolute, it ends when there is a conflict with higher authority or when it would require a sinful action.
