I SO think I mangled the spelling of “honorarium”- sorry!

Convert Alert!: My husband and I entered the church last Easter Vigil, and had our two children (ages 4 and 1 at the time) baptised on Trinity Sunday. We didn’t give anyone any money, because we were ignorant of the custom. I know that it’s not necessary, but with baby number three, who is due in June, I’d like to, you know, offer something.

My question is twofold: 1) how much is customary? and 2) how do we handle it? Write a check to the Father and drop it off in the office? Hand him an envelope after the baptism? Slip him a 20 while shaking hands goodbye? (kidding on that one).

Thank you, protocol experts!

You are correct that nothing is required. In my parish we suggest a donation of $20 to the parish and, if they so desire, $10 to the priest or deacon who does the baptism. An envelope with the offering given to the priest/deacon at the end of the baptism is usually appropriate.
