thank you estes bob for this reply… lets get back on topic please… As a Catholic, I do expect my pastor to give homilies about the current issues too… and with whatever God given talents he has… if it means being blunt and to the point, so be it… or if he was graced with a more elegant style… fine, as long as the message is conveyed!
Great minds think alike.(or we both went to the same seminar).
When I counsel a woman considering an abortion I also refer to Jeremiah. I find talking about Gods plan is also very effective when asking a woman to consider placeing her child for adoption-that is that she can help complete Gods plan for an infertile couple to have a family.
However i believe we are talking about a sermon here. I wasnt suggestng the pastor yell at anyone-just be blunt as to what an abject evil abortion is and how it is unconscionable for a Catholic to support it directly or indirectly
What do you mean by “blunt?” A homily can be extremely blunt yet still not offensive. If a blunt sermon on abortion makes one uncomfortable or offends them they really need to ask themselves why?
If the message is conveyed but not received because people are offended and have stopped listening, the message is a wasted.thank you estes bob for this reply… lets get back on topic please… As a Catholic, I do expect my pastor to give homilies about the current issues too… and with whatever God given talents he has… if it means being blunt and to the point, so be it… or if he was graced with a more elegant style… fine, as long as the message is conveyed!
You know we have no idea what kind sermon the pastor gave. It seems we’ve been sidetracked into discussing something that is totally irrelevant. The question is not the manner in which they give the sermon as much as it is why are these sermons so rare?If the message is conveyed but not received because people are offended and have stopped listening, the message is a wasted.
Because the priest certainly isn’t better at ministry than Christ was. So if Christ being God, had to resort to calling people “hypocrites” and “Vipers”, the priest cannot, by definition, so would a priest. Why?
Yeah, that’ll work.Is it not said that a priest should be a lion in the pulpit and a lamb in the confessional.
People don’t know the faith because all these wishy-washy priests don’t want to say it in black and white. They are afraid of the busy-body old ladies that write nasty letters when the priest speakes the truth, so the priests diguise the truth under nice politically correct phrases and people lose the meaning.
Abortion is MURDER!
Murder is EVIL!
Catholics should not do EVIL!
Simple.
I wish a few more – no-- ALL priests would stand up in the pulpit and speak the truth clearly and strongly and loudly.
Look at all the Protestant ministers that draw crouds of hundreds, they don’t say anything quietly. They speak or yell the truth as they see it and they don’t care what some old bitty is going to say. They yell the truth in no uncertain terms and they are respected for it. Many people convert to being Protestant because these ministers show such strength and courage.
Why do priest hide? We need more Christ-like priests who will shout the truth from the highest rooftops. We need priests who are zealots!
Even Archbishop Sheen was known for speaking strongly and sometimes yelling. IT IS THE TRUTH! Why do you want to hide the light under a basket or give your son a stone instead of food? People are hungry for the truth. I know so many people who know so little about their faith and if some priest would do a little straight talking these people would benefit greatly. Maybe at first they would beYeah, that’ll work.
Adoption would have spared the child those parents AND allowed the baby to live… there are better choices!**when a family told him they were going to get an abortion for their FASD teenager **
At least the baby is being spared the horrible fate of having to be raised by this family.
How can you say something so horrible!**when a family told him they were going to get an abortion for their FASD teenager **

Thank you moderator!!!This thread is straying from the original topic. Please take discussion of side issues to new or existing threads.
Mine hasn’t and I wish he would. The only time in the last couple of years I’ve heard abortion and contraception mentioned, I was at a conference. A couple of Fathers of Mercy were there–no holds barred truth at it’s finest!Thank you moderator!!!
So back on topic… Who else’s priest has given a good homily on ABC and abortion?
Better yet… how many of you wish your priest would?
Aurora I think you are right, I too fell into this for years… I wish I had heard more when I was in that place in my life.Mine hasn’t and I wish he would. The only time in the last couple of years I’ve heard abortion and contraception mentioned, I was at a conference. A couple of Fathers of Mercy were there–no holds barred truth at it’s finest!
So many of us (myself included) have fallen into that “ABC is up to our consciences” nonsense. I wish more priests spoke on ABC and abortion. It would prevent so much heartache.
