Has anyone gone through marital counseling that has helped in the discovery of an affair? I suspect my husband of cheating, at least one affair and a one night stand. I am in individual counseling that is soon to be marital counseling and my counselor agrees and even thinks there is/was more going on than I suspect. All my husband has admitted to is making out with someone ( she was 15 years younger than him ) and I highly doubt it stopped there (thus the assumption of a one night stand). Anyway, I have posted more of my story elsewhere so will not rehash but am looking for hope–will the marital counseling help uncover the truth? Has anyone had success with finding out the entire truth with the help of a professional? We are a large Catholic family, the doubt is killing me inside, I feel like I don’t really know the man I am married to.

You dont’ need to know the gritty details of what occurred. It will only hurt you more.

What you do need to know:

“do I need to go to the doctor to be tested for STD?”

I wouldn’t expect him to confess the first time you meet. Hopefully, though if you keep up with the meetings, he will open up to what is really going on and you two can work it out from there.

Thank you for your replies. I went on my own to be tested for STD’s and when I later told him he said, “why? I told you we didn’t have sex.” I wish I believed him, when I reminded him you can get STD’s from oral sex he was silent, so I wonder if the making out he disclosed included oral sex. I have not asked him in detail, I suspect he will lie anyway. He’s currently deployed so I am choosing to address things thoughoughly when he returns since he is in harms way. I do realize he could be cheating over there. I don’t think so but I could be wrong. I never thought he would cheat on me in the first place so I question if I really know him, and I doubt many of the things he tells me. It’s very sad how things have changed.

I think it’s reasonable to expect more disclosure after several sessions, not necessarily the first session. That’s a great point. Thank you.

Hi OP.

I’m sorry that you are going through this emotional upset right now.😦 May I ask, if your husband is deployed, what gave you the suspicion in the first place that he had had an extramarital encounter?
