I have a girlfriend who just moved in with another friend. The person who owns the house has it thoroughly furnished and has been there for awhile. But I feel like I should bring a housewarming gift this weekend when I see the friend that just moved in. However, my mind is blank about what to bring. Any ideas?

How about a nice smelling jar candle, or a plate of yummy homemade cookies?

Or Both?😃

Abby:

How thoughtful of you!

What about Yankee candles (they smell delicious, especially the cinnamon scented ones for this time of year) and you can get them with a coupon at Bed Bath and Beyond. Or, a rosemary plant. Yes, the same thing as the herb, and you can buy a small “tree” that’s shaped like a Christmas tree at places like nicer nurseries or floral shops. Home Depot sometimes carries them, but I’ve found them to look less elegant than the ones from better stores. Put a big red ribbon on the pot and you’ve got a great looking present. And if your friend is a devout Catholic, you can get framed prints that might include a prayer, bible verse, or house blessing. Or a new cross/crucifix.

Good luck!

This is an old Italian custom - bread and salt.

You could bring a FABULOUS loaf of Italian French Bread and some really cute salt and pepper shakers.

The bread and salt welcome you to your new home…

it’s a little weird but it is different!

A loaf of good bread, a box of salt, and a bottle of good wine.

That is typically my housewarming gift.

If they have a house, a small garden ornament might be a nice gift. Maybe a stone frog, or a St. Francis statue? 🙂

How about a blessed candle with a little note explaining the blessing, etc. Holy water for the house blessing and a how-to explanation.

Thanks for all the ideas! 🙂

I usually bring wine and something I’ve baked anyway when I see her, so I don’t think it would be special enough for a housewarming gift. I’ll see what I find when I go shopping in a bit, but thanks for some starting ideas!

something consumable, as it is hard to choose decor items to fit every taste. flowers are always welcome, or a houseplant, but if it is a party and they have a planned menu, something like a bottle of wine, or other treat that can be enjoyed later is always good.

I second (or third or fourth?) the suggestion of the Yankee candle. I recently found one of ours and I’ve lit it every night for the last week and a half. They last practically forever, smell amazing, and make whatever room they are in even more cozy and comfortable.
