How am I to be a good Catholic here?

My sister is having her third child in June. I am the Godmother to her first child. She and her husband were having trouble deciding who they wanted for a Godmother for this child (my husband if going to be the Godfather). I received a phone call from my brother-in-law last week TELLING me that I was going to be the Godmother. Well this past weekend my sister and brother-in-law got together with his brother and his new wife (Katie). She was asking questions about the procedures for being a Godparent. Well my sister and her husband had ruled her out because she grew up a catholic and then walked away from the faith to become a “Christian”. My brother-in-law does not want to hurt his brothers feeling and my sister doesn’t want to hurt mine. I don’t want any hard feeling from anybody. I remember how happy I was when I was asked. My problem is do I decline the offer to make things easier and let Katie have that good feeling of being asked (even though she’s not catholic) or keep my mouth shut? Hope I wasn’t too confusing, thanks!

Dear my,

What is of greatest importance here is the child’s welfare–not the feelings of the adults involved. You are the one who is most qualified. Let the chips fall where they may.
