How bad does the weather need to be to miss mass?

Columbus broke its record for snowfall–16 inches!

Just saw on TV that Port Columbus got a bit over 20 inches.

According to Channel 10, all Vigil Masses in the city were canceled this evening. I spent the evening shoveling out the driveway, and I bet I moved a few tons of snow. I could probably get out in an emergency, but it wouldn’t be easy…or safe. Looks like I’ll be sleeping in tomorrow.

The question that everyone needs to ask themselves is whether or not under similar circumstances they would venture out to other places; such as work, school, an expense show that they wanted to see and for which they already purchased tickets for, etc.

If the answer is “yes”, then they should go to mass as well.

It was very hard to miss Liturgy on Saturday. But we made the right choice, I think–we would have been on the road for an hour each way, with three young kids in the car…and dangerous conditions. Even today most churches in our area are cancelling services, rather than have people drive in Level 2 conditions. The church next door had about five people show up! We stayed safe. God understands.

My family is in the midst of a big argument at the moment, and I thought I would ask for advice.

It’s Saturday afternoon, and there is about half an inch of brand-new ice covering everything. It’s very slippery and very dangerous to drive.

My mother is insisting that we have to get to mass tonight, because who knows what the weather will do tomorrow.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is calling for ice/sleet all night, followed by a couple inches of snow on top. And all of the weather bulletins are urging people to stay off the roads.

Am I wrong to think that weather like this is bad enough to miss mass? Because…you know…I don’t WANT to miss mass, but it’s a real **mess **out there!!!

I know it’s late in the conversation, but we are in the Cinci area and we got a foot out of that storm Friday and Saturday.
We had already decided not to try to get downtown for the TLM, but planned to go to our local parish just around the corner. Then this morning, The news “closing ticker” showed that all services were canceled at our church. My guess is they couldn’t get the parking areas cleared in time.

Anyway, after much consideration (we have health issues), I decided it would be best to stay home. EWTN runs mass twice on Sunday, which is one alternative. The other is to take your missal and read through the mass. Then, if possible, try to get to mass during the week.

If you still have concerns, mention it to your confessor next time, I’m sure he will understand. (Just as I know God understands these things).

Ok, I’m sure the point has already passed, but I felt like weighing in anyways. I’m living in London, Ontario, in the snowbelt. We just got at least 25cm over the course of Saturday, so I’m going to take you quite literally when you said half an inch of ice. Stay in!! Please!! I carpool with various friends to church and last night was so out. This morning the plows had done their thing, and we got through.
