How best morally to understand scripture

Christ helped explain to me the spirit of the prophets as the golden rule. And with the golden rule I can understand all of the later prophets. Though sometimes with Isaiah and Ezekiel I am disheartened. I feel that these prophets are especially merciless in their particular punishing of the wicked. What I mean to say is that I don’t see how it applies to the golden rule, as neither prophet ever mention redemption or grace on a level that is realistic for a loving God, instead it is far more brutal. I believe this brutality shows the flaw of the prophets to an extent, their mortality in other words.

Jesus was also harsh when it came to his judgments of the wicked, though he himself was more optimistic with his powerful and hopeful message that “through God anything is possible.” Christ also seems to give a message of people realizing their faults through tribulation, this message I find difficult to find among the prophets.
 
When one considers the injustice, vice, and idolatry being practiced in the two Kingdoms, it is no surprise that the prophets issued dire warnings about impending punishment. What they mostly got for their trouble and concern was persecution and even death. Eventually as they had predicted the Assyrians overtook the Northern Kingdom and killed, made slaves of and scattered the people to the four winds. Not long after the Southern Kingdom fell to the Babylonians and the same thing happened with many of them carried away to Babylon.The prophets themselves did no punishing they had tried to warn their people to repent and turn back to the Lord and his ways.

Read the prophets closely and it is not difficult to see that the same warnings may well apply to our contemporary civilization.
