How can Catholics date?

It’s been a long time since I was a young single Catholic on a date, but there was no end of things for us to do. Most of my friends in high school went to Catholic schools. There was always something going on at someone’s school. We went to plays and concerts and dances and homecomings and fall festivals. My school sponsered a Hootenanny every year. I said it was a long time ago. We had a wonderful time with that.

The city where I live has a ton of free cultural activities. We have a history museum, an art museum and a world class zoo that are all free. We have a huge municipal outdoor theatre that seats 11,000 and the last 1100 seats are free for every performance. We’d meet on the parking lot with picnic baskets and take turns standing in line. When the gates opened at 7pm, we’d all rush in for the best seats. You can’t beat free. We’d spend all day Saturday or Sunday in the park. All the things I mentioned above are in the park. There is also a lake with row boats, canoes and paddle boats that look like swans, a fancy restaurant, tennis and golf, horse back riding, archery and a skating rink – roller in the summer, ice in the winter. There are botanical gardens where you can take pictures of flowers and butterflies, and a science museum where you can make your hair stand on end.

There were coffee houses where you could listen to jazz or poetry, second hand stores to window shop or try on old fashions, every kind of restaurant under the sun in every price range. There are ethnic grocery stores. You could get all the ingredients for a Viet Namese or Bosnian meal then go home and make it. You could walk around an old cemetery and read the names of people who lived in your town during the Civil War.

Then there are the old standards, movies, dinner out, walking around the mall. Ball games, playing cards…whatever you like to do, and if you’re open to new and different experiences you’ll never have to be bored.
