How can Hell even theoretically exist?

I understand the Catholic conception of Hell as a place of separation from God. How do we reconcile this idea with the assertion in Colossians 1:17 that “in him all things hold together”? If things “hold together” and maintain their existence in God, by his presence and through his active sustaining power, how is a place of separation from God even theoretically possible? Wouldn’t a person separated from God cease to be held together, and thus cease to exist?

A state of eternal self-exclusion, from communion (grace), thus excluding the Beatific Vision, but God preserves all human souls, which are immortal and immaterial, and all resurrected bodies. The soul is eternal but may be dead or filled with life.

Colossians 1
15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For in him were all things created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominations, or principalities, or powers. All things were created by him and in him.
Haydock Commentary, Verse 15
Thrones, &c. are commonly understood to refer to the celestial hierarchy of Angels, though as to their particular rank, &c. nothing certain is known. We may here observe, that the Holy Spirit proportions itself and speaks according to our ideas of a temporal kingdom, in which one authority is subject to another. In the same manner the Angels seem subordinate to one another. (St. Dionysius in Calmet)
All things were created by him, and in him, and (3) consist in him. If all things that are were made by him, he himself was not made. And his divine power is also signified, when it is said all things consist or are preserved by him. (Witham)
Matthew 10
28 And fear ye not them that kill the body, and are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body in hell.

That’s helpful, thanks. So could it be said, then, that Hell is not a state of absolute separation from God, but rather the state of maximum separation from God? Perhaps it is never possible to truly escape God’s presence except because that would require nonexistence, but the souls who hate God and want to get away from him are allowed to get as far away as theoretically possible, until the only thing connecting them to him is the fact of their existence.

It is not an absolute situation. God still sustains the existence of the damned. Here is how the Catholic Encyclopedia describes the separation:
The poena damni, or pain of loss, consists in the loss of the beatific vision and in so complete a separation of all the powers of the soul from God that it cannot find in Him even the least peace and rest.

FWIW something that caught my eye years ago,…

Vico:
And all created things.
Could you clarify what you mean by that?
The Holy Trinity created and sustains creation and implants in the nature of things the potentiality of future development co-operating in all the operations of nature.

Psalm 103
1 For David himself. Bless the Lord, O my soul: O Lord my God, thou art exceedingly great. Thou hast put on praise and beauty:
2 And art clothed with light as with a garment. Who stretchest out the heaven like a pavilion:
3 Who coverest the higher rooms thereof with water. Who makest the clouds thy chariot: who walkest upon the wings of the winds.
4 Who makest thy angels spirits: and thy ministers a burning fire.
5 Who hast founded the earth upon its own bases: it shall not be moved for ever and ever.
6 The deep like a garment is its clothing: above the mountains shall the waters stand.
7 At thy rebuke they shall flee: at the voice of thy thunder they shall fear.
8 The mountains ascend, and the plains descend into the place which thou hast founded for them.
9 Thou hast set a bound which they shall not pass over; neither shall they return to cover the earth.
10 Thou sendest forth springs in the vales: between the midst of the hills the waters shall pass.
11 All the beasts of the field shall drink: the wild asses shall expect in their thirst.
12 Over them the birds of the air shall dwell: from the midst of the rocks they shall give forth their voices.
13 Thou waterest the hills from thy upper rooms: the earth shall be filled with the fruit of thy works:

Uhm GOD is all powerful HE can create this “place” because HE will not destroy what HE has created. Even the ones who reject HIM will not be destroyed because of it. They will be separated from HIM as they wished.
Peace!

C S Lewis described Hell as hardly any existence at all. Some persons diminish their humanity bit by bit through this life by conscious choices. They still retain free will up to the end.

Some have made themselves to be unhappy if they were to go to heaven. If they were dragged there they would try to escape.
They want to be left alone. God grants them their wish.

He described the gates of hell as locked from the inside, not by Satan but by individuals.

For someone who loves God this separation from God would feel like fire. But they don’t love God.

And, if they realize that, then it probably irritates them that much more!

I don’t know that I’d call it “maximum separation”. However, it is exclusion from the Beatific Vision, as well as full and undeniable knowledge that it’s the ultimate destiny of each human, and they chose to reject it. That’s the ‘separation’ we’re talking about, in this context!

If God’s creation would be separated from God, would be cease to exist.

CCC 301 With creation, God does not abandon his creatures to themselves. He not only gives them being and existence, but also, and at every moment, upholds and sustains them in being, enables them to act and brings them to their final end. Recognizing this utter dependence with respect to the Creator is a source of wisdom and freedom, of joy and confidence.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA Divine Providence explains;

The beneficent purpose of an all-seeing Providence, is wholly gratuitous, entirely unmerited (Romans 3:24; 9:11-2).

It extends to all men (Romans 2:10; 1 Timothy 2:4), even to the reprobate Jews (Romans 11:26 sq.); and by it all God’s dealings with man are regulated (Ephesians 1:11).

It extends to every individual, adapting itself to the needs of each (St. John Chrysostom, “Hom. xxviii in Matt.”, n. 3).

All things are created and governed with a view to man, to the development of his life and his intelligence, and to the satisfaction of his needs (Aristides, “Apol.”, i, v).

His wisdom He so orders all events within the universe that the end for which it was created may be realized.

God preserves the universe in being; He acts in and with every creature in each and all its activities.

God is the sole ruler of the world. His will governs all things. He loves all men, desires the salvation of all, and His providence extends to all nation.

Again, from the fact that God has created the universe, it shows that He must also govern it; for just as the contrivances of man demand attention and guidance, so God, as a good workman, must care for His work.

That end is that all creatures should manifest the glory of God, and in particular that man should glorify Him, recognizing in nature the work of His hand, serving Him in obedience and love, and thereby attaining to the full development of his nature and to eternal happiness in God.

THE MYSTERY OF PREDESTINATION John Salza (Catholic theologian.)

“The vocation to eternal life is supernatural, it surpasses the powers of human intellect and will, he must be predestined to that end by God.

God must direct
us to this end by His power and grace.

Thus, predestination is a certain and infallible truth, revealed by Scripture and taught by the Catholic Church.”
.
No one can be saved without predestined to heaven, there is no other way of salvation.

Furthermore, NO ONE can lose salvation who are predestined to heaven, because they are all receivers of God’s gift of Final Perseverance. – Infallible teachings of the Trent.

The whole Catholic Church is praying for the salvation of the entire human race (CCC 1058), we all should believe what we are praying for!!!

God’s love and justice demands the fulfilment of (CCC 1058), by predestined to heaven, saving the entire human race.

God bless

I wonder if we are looking at this too much from a physical point of view where God isn’t, and not where He chooses not to be in a way?

I have no doubt God could (figuratively from our way of speaking) walk into hell visible to the damned at any time He chooses. In my mind, it seems to be like when someone locks themselves in a room to be alone. God does not desire hell, but permits it. It is also possible that He is there in some way to maintain it, but hides Himself from the damned. Just as our guardian angels are hidden from us in our senses, doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Perhaps God does the same?

That’s my two cents…
