I am looking for a special way to celebrate Lent with my children. Does anyone have any suggestions??😃

Family penances - such as giving up meat together, or giving up TV together. Have your own “Family Fish Fry”, which could be a lot of fun…even if, maybe, it’s not supposed to be…

Family prayer - institute the Family Rosary each night, or once a week. Go to Stations together. Say an Act of Contrition with your kids each night, or do an Examination of Conscience.

Attend Ash Wednesday together.

Here are some suggestions:
Go with your children to church and go through the stations of the cross together. There are great books with stations of the cross prayers for kids. I like to use one that is done from the perspective of a Palestinian family witnessing the events. It is very moving.

Go to Ash Wednesday service and talk about the reading from Joel-God asks us to “Come back to me”. Talk about how lent is a journey closer to God. What are some of the things we will take on this journey (Talk about the symbols of Lent and what they mean)
then talk about what kinds of things hold us back from God.
My kids are making a Lent chain. they take 40 strips of paper and on each write something they will either fast from that day, how they might pray that day, or what they will do for others that day. they put the pieces together in a chain and then rip off a day at a time. Their acts bring them closer to God (breaking the chains that bind them so to speak.)
We aslo like to read from scripture each day. If you go to domestic-church.com and go to the firdge art section, they have a wonderful schedule of Lenten readings-or you can go by the lectionary.
Celebrate the feast days of the saints whose feast days fall during Lent.
Make pretzels together. They were a tradtional lenten food when fat and eggs were prohibited.
May your Lenten journey be one that brings you closer together and to God!!
