How can I explain the sacrament of Reconciliation?

Hi everyone:

Please help me to explain the sacrament of reconciliation to my husband’s family. My son was proud of making his First Reconciliation and my in-laws were oh, that’s nice, and changed the subject. I know they just don’t understand the whole concept, and I am looking for a good way to explain it to them, with scriptural passages.
