This is very interesting. I don’t think I’ve experienced this. I usually feel recharged after praying, but never exhausted. May I ask why you feel “mentally exhausted” after praying?
I can’t speak for Angelic Peace, but sometimes I also feel exhausted. I guess Christ did too in the Garden before He was arrested. Sometimes when you pray you have to call to mind the things that are overwhelming, and what we have to face, and that can be difficult to endure. That’s my best personal psychoanalysis for the moment. 😃

I’ve recently started a Rosary novena, and all of a sudden I can’t make it through the second decade without falling asleep. Then I struggle to finish it at all. I will pray a “Hail Mary,” and then I realize that I’ve been asleep for the last five?] minutes.

During my silent retreat earlier this month, it was much easier.

I think the best thing to do is just keep going. We are not praying for ourselves… we are giving this time to God so that He can do His work on our souls.

I suppose. Maybe you can offer up those things that you find overwhelming?

Anyway, one little tip I’d offer is trying some new prayers you’ve never done before, before. QUOTE]

before i even read this post today, yesterday evening i sort of felt compelled to say a completely different short prayer…my ususal one what i say the most is… jesus, mary, and joseph, i love you, save souls…although i do say others too…
anyway out of the blue i suddenly felt that i should say : gentle jesus, convert sinners, assist and save the dying, release the holy souls in purgatory…the strangest thing was i wasn’t actually thinking of praying at that particular time…i had just walked home in the cold and wanted to get warm…anyway this prayer came so easily and i was able to say it easier than my other prayers…i am still having difficulties (when i try to pray)…but that prayer seems to come easily but it seems more encouraging now…
anyway that happened yesterday…so it was such a coincidence when i came on the forum and read your post to try some new prayers…
good advice:thumbsup:

Prayer can be easily defined as a conversation with God. I too have a formulaic routine. But aside from that, I also recognize that prayer is a means to be united with God through the mind.

Early century monks would define prayer as an ascent of the mind towards God. In a deeper sense, prayer is what our hearts speak.

Sometimes, I let go of the routine and just say “Hi, God! What’s going on?” or “Heavenly Father, so on and so on has been bothering me…” I talk to God like I would to a person at the same time recognizing that he is Lord. I listen and I speak. Sometimes, I just shut up and that suffices as prayer. Remember the saying, “Be still and know that I am God”?

👍

Try to break out of the routine once in a while because they can be restraining. You’ll be ok.

This may be a very simple suggestion, but try and visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. It is hard to feel drained saying your prayers when you have Jesus right in front of you. So try and find an Adoration Chapel near you. Even if you have to go thirty minutes away like me, it is well worth it!
