How can I trust the sayings of Fatima?

If somebody says Mary said _______ at Fatima, how do I know if it is true? Anybody can make up sayings and attribute it to our holy Mother. What did she actually say? How can I distinguish actual sayings from false or pious information?

Hi, once you determine what the Church deems worthy of belief in regard to Fatima, then your trust is determined by your faith in the devotion if you choose to embrace it. If you decide not to, or are unsure, that is ok, but it’s best not to question it publicly.

As Eucharisted said, it’s an approved Apparition.

Fatima is an approved private revelation. That means that it underwent many years of scrutiny by the Church. It isn’t the same as “anybody can make up sayings”.

That being said, since it is a private revelation, you are perfectly free to accept it or not. Private revelations are not matters we are bound to accept as matters of faith. But as I_Believe stated, you may not want to publically voice your choice to not believe in Fatima. Not because it would get you in any “trouble” with the Church but because many people are very devoted to Our Lady of Fatima and they might be offended.
 
Corki, I can be wrong but I think the OP is asking how do you know if someone is quoting the real words of Our Lady at Fatima. I don’t think they are questioning Our Lady’s words themselves.

Atassina, are looking for a difinitive link (ie Vatican - since we know they are trustworthy) of the words Our Lady spoke?

This is precisely my own concern.

All sorts of things seem to have been attributed to the apparitions at Fatima, including different versions of the same locution.

To say nothing about the controversy over the Third Secret and whether or not Sr. Lucia said that the Consecration of Russia ever took place.

What “everybody knows” is not always accurate.

I would really like to read an authoritative and precise account of this story which would get as close to primary sources as possible.
 
Yes, there is a ton of misleading garbage out there trying to trip up earnest Catholics with a great love for our Blessed Lady - especially to serve their agendas that are often at odds with legitimate authority in the Church. Remember also that if you are reading in English, the Fatima material is in translation. Some of these translations were done a long time ago and some words do shift meanings slightly over time.

As somebody else said here, stick close to published (not internet) books written by reputable authors with footnotes, etc., so they can be looked up. I have seen many, many completely false and incorrect things online.

Unfortunately, Fatima is one of those Marian apparitions that seems to attract a lot of fanatics. That’s not to blame the apparitions themselves or true Christians who find them helpful to their spiritual lives, however.
 
Oh, and the stuff about the Third Secret - oh, boy… just stay away from all that. Seriously. :eek::rolleyes::(🤷
