How can the Church support non-Catholic politicians?

Where I live our church came out locally and nationally telling us not to vote for a senator who was Catholic but pro-choice. He did not support abortion, but felt it was the woman’s right to choose. The church went to far as having the local bishop deny giving the senator communion.

My struggle with this is that the man they elected is a Babtist who has been very active in his church in his postion against Catholics and our beliefs. His church in particuliar brought in Dobson to have our Catholic Senator defeated, part on the abortion issue, but more on their disagreement with Catholics on our relgious beliefs.

I have been in groups where the senator who was elected has actually said we need to pray for these other religions (Catholics) for their faulty beliefs and their worships of false gods, referencing Mary.

Anyway, we refused to elect a good Catholic who opposed the church on one position to elect a man who beliefs the whole Catholic religion is a problem. He goes as far with his local church members to hire only babtists, and to not support Catholics in thier business and personal endeavors.

This greatly troubles me, and has caused me serious struggles with the church. I watch while others divorce, have affairs, etc which are against the church and are forgiven, but we could not forgive one senator who did a lot of good locally for Catholics for one public stance. A local businessman had an affair, despite having several adult children, and a new younger woman on his arm he has been accepted back into the church and has been given communium by the Bishop himself. Why do we forgive one man for his sins but not another, and who makes that decision.

In our community I am amshamed to admit I am Catholic because these Babtists lambast my church, my religion and my beliefs and point to our Catholic Senator the Church denouced, while touting their own man our church helped to elect.

Help, I do not feel I should have to defend my church against other relgions we helped to support by our Bishops policies.

Dear friend,

The negative things that those Baptists are saying and doing pale when compared to the 4,000 innocent human beings in this country that are aborted every day! This is a matter of human life and death. No Catholic is a good Catholic who supports “pro choice.” The choice is never acknowledged for what it is. It is the choice to kill. As Fr. Pavone says: “Why are we passive about abortion so much?”
