How can the two versions of the nativity of Jesus be reconciled?

In Luke 2, the Holy Family returned to Nazareth after the Presentation.

In Matthew 2, the story of the Magi is related. The Magi event appears to have happened in Bethlehem. The Holy Family had to flee to Egypt not returning to Nazareth until after Herod is dead. It also seemed to indicate that the Holy Family was planning to settle in Bethlehem after Egypt but decided against that because Herod’s son, Archelaus, was ruling in his father’s place.

Did the Holy Family go to Egypt or not?
