When my mom was growing up in the 1950’s, she raised funds for Catholic missions, saved used postage stamps for them, etc. She even began a lifelong friendship with a Dutch priest who served in Borneo. I never hear about these opportunities anymore. Do people still focus on Catholic missions? Do you raise funds for them, pray for them, etc.? Any ideas about how our family can support missionaries?

I would start with your local parish/diocese to see if and when they do mission trips.

When it comes to charities and missions, do some investigating to try and get a sense how well managed they are.

I know in my case I don’t just throw money around because some groups says they are “Catholic”, “pro-life” “family values” or whatever. That doesn’t mean a well-run organization.

I think a good check against some of this stuff are in-kind donations. I would recommend considering that as a option as well.

Hi Gracepoole,
60 years later, there are still missions in need of assistance.
The FSSP is involved with two such missions, one in Nigeria and another in Colombia. Below is a link with additional information including ways to provide support.
May God bless you.

The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest has several missions in Gabon, Africa.
A link to the webpage of the institue which discusses these missions is posted below.

From the webpage:
"Some of the Institute’s missions are located in the middle of the jungle. We have restored and constructed several churches, chapels, schools, kindergartens, and medical dispensaries. "
