Heaven is the immediate presence of God, otherwise known as the Beatific Vision. Because those experiencing the Beatific Vision cannot sin, Christian theologians speculate that the angels were tested before being granted the Beatific Vision. The exact nature of the test is unknown but those who chose God received the Beatific Vision; those who did not entered hell. Satan never experienced the Beatific Vision, and so he was never in heaven in the first place.
