Pope John Paul I was neither healthy at the time of his election nor ultra-liberal. According to historians, he had been in poor health at the time of his election, had not been seen by a Vatican physician, and had not been able to have prescriptions filled during the upheaval to his life following the election (source). As for claims that he was “ultra-liberal,” anecdotal evidence suggests otherwise. For example, at the time of John Paul I’s death, the “ultra-orthodox” Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) was visiting South America as John Paul’s personal representative.
