How did Mary explain to her family and Joseph why she was pregnant?

I find Mary’s (God’s will be done) to be the most powerful answer a humble person can give. How did she handle the burden to explain the origin of the child she carried. She must have been more than a human being since if it was me i could have easily rejected. Can you imagine her saying that the child was from God? I believe this is what made her second to none but God as queen of heaven.

We simply don’t know. There is no record.
It couldn’t have been an easy conversation.

There is a book called The Mystical City Of God, by a mystic named Mary of Agreda, who claimed to have been given a detailed vision of Mary’s entire life.
According to this book, Mary and Joseph were living together as brother and sister, and he noticed she was getting bigger, but they never discussed it until after the angel revealed it to Joseph in a dream. This revelation also claims that Mary had a limited social circle, so Joseph was the only one to see.

Of course, the problem is, the Bible says they were betrothed at the time, and not living together.

But on the other hand, “living together” was also an old timey phrase for “having sexual relations”.

But on the other, other hand, this was a private revelation and we’re free to accept or reject it.

Mary is not more than a human being. She is a human being like the rest of us were meant to be— without original sin and in a state of sanctifying grace (as were Adam and Eve before the fall).

Why was she so quick to assume the being who appeared to her was from God? What proof did it offer? If a naive young virgin today received a visit from a strange unknown being telling her she was somehow magically impregnated with the Son of God she would probably be terrified.

There is a long Jewish tradition as shown in the OT of the “angel of the Lord” appearing to persons chosen by God for some special purpose. Mary would have been aware of these stories.

Although she may have been naive in the sense of being young and not having much exposure to worldly knowledge, she was not spiritually naive; she was “full of grace”, free of sin, and likely had a strong relationship with God via prayer and trusted God to protect her from evil (again as many of the OT scriptures indicated a good Jewish person should do). Therefore, when the angel of the Lord showed up, she accepted the angel as being of the Lord.

And yes, she was probably initially afraid, since in Luke 1:30 the angel says to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary” and the normal reaction that persons had to seeing the Angel of the Lord in the OT was to be fearful, especially since many of them believed that looking upon the Lord’s messenger was essentially looking upon the face of God and would cause them to die, because no one but the very holy priests in particular religious contexts was supposed to see God.

Mary didn’t need to explain because God explained .

"But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of
David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”

“And why am I (Elizabeth) so honoured, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For as soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.…”

Mary was terrified.

“Who having heard, was troubled at his saying, and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary” (Luke 1:29-30)

Also this Annunciation was foretold many times in the OT.

I have been told there are some suggestions later on that people did suspect Mary of sexual impropriety.

There’s a passage in the gospel talking about “Jesus, son of Mary,” where in that society you would refer to a man by his father’s name unless it was in doubt. There are also some evidence of a rumor that Jesus was the son of a Roman soldier.

I’m sure that much have been a burden on Mary as well, that her holy submission was seen by some as evidence of her sin.

My understanding is that Mary could, under the law, have been stoned to death being found pregnant with someone else’s child. Thus, Joseph shows real love of her and mercy when he resolves to “put her away [divorce her] quietly” and not subject her to the law.
Mary’s trust in God must have been tremendous. Joseph was informed of the true nature of the Child, even while Mary kept silent and did not try to explain.

Mary couldn’t tell anyone, not even Joseph. Who would believe it? No one. Only heaven could reveal the incarnation. Only if one is called by the Father can they come to the Son. Jesus lived that reality even as a Child.
