How did our society evolve over the past 150 years without God and an upper world?

Indeed, it sounds like people were much smarter and more united back then. I often wonder whether they had unicameral brains back then instead of the bicameral brains we have today in our world.

The story seems to fit the theory. The theory would explain that the people of Babel all heard one voice from the left hemisphere and according to the story the voice didn’t come from above, it was their own.

I really do not know how things has changed, but I deeply believe that the story of Babel describes a real event that produced drastic changes in the way we think, feel and communicate. It sure does explain all the arguing and disagreements we experience in the present day and age. I have often wondered how much more powerful our cognitive abilities would be with a unicameral brain. Seeing how our current world could not have come about with our own innate wit adds to the speculation. The story of the Tower of Babel mystifies.

I believe we live in a world of lies and deceit which people are immune to. The lies and deceit are right there in front of people but people are too blind to see them.

Given it’s chronologically after the flood it’s interesting that at the end of the story they’re called the children of Adam.
Their building is made of brick. uniform , each one the same as the other, and stuck together with bitumen like they were making it waterproof.

Bricks in contrast to stones which are differfent from each other. No two stones are exactly alike.
I think they were called the children of Adam because it’s the entire human race acting as one mind.

Gen ch 10 the very last sentence.

These are the children of Sem according to their kindreds andtongues, and countries in their nations. [32] These are the families of Noe, according to their peoples and nations. By these were the nations divided on the earth after the flood.

That’s the last line in chapter 10 and below the first in chapter 11

The singlemindedness could be a reaction to the trauma of the flood. The flood was a judgement and it probably didn’t seem like God liked us much. Obviously the children of Adam were going to give it a go without God.

I’m thinking their tower was also supposed to survive a flood. Maybe the trauma of the near death of the human race created a stress disorder that permeated the entire race. Could we have been headed towards permanently structuring human society to be no more than a bee hive or an ant colony?

That’s interesting! I too believe that the children of Sem were going to do things there own way, without God. I also believe that in these “ancient” times, people were far more advanced than we are today.

I deeply believe that the tales in the Old Testament have great religious meaning, as I’m sure you do too. Again, my own take on this was that at the time of the Tower of Babel, people had a unicameral brain which far surpassed the bicameral brains that we have today. I also personally believe in a super-race of unicameral people who live in some kind of an upper-world and who provides us with technology and guidance. Without such an upper-world, how else could our world have gotten to where it is today?!
