How did St. Augustine convert?

We know that his mum prayed for him for many years (18?), how did that work? Surely God would have poured grace onto Augustine all that time and I guess Augustine kept rejecting it but why after such a long time did he accept God’s grace?

Thanks.

He describes it himself in his Confessions, which is a great read for any Christian. I think Bishop Ambrose was highly influential on him, and he had spent over a decade of his twenties+ searching different philosophies and religions for the truth. Actually reading Paul’s letters really moved him, too. He found the truths he found elsewhere incorporated in Paul’s writings and the Christian faith as a cohesive whole, and it resolved the philosophical quandaries he struggled with.

Because everyone has a “rock bottom” and eventually sees what they need to do to be happy, peaceful and content in this life.
