What is the histroy for the development of the reading at Holy Mass?

Jim,

The part of the Mass called LIturgy of the Word goes back to the begining of the Church, when bible readings were chosen to instruct the catechumens, who then left before the Eucharistic part of the Mass.

Until the liturgical reform, readings were distributed rather haphazardly throughout the year. When the so-called Novus Ordo mass was introduced, in 1969, it was decided to go through the whole bible (but not every passage) over a period of three years. These years are called a,b and c. Thus over a period of three years, we listen to representative samples of all the books of the Bible. If I remember right, we are now in year a.

Thank you for your answer.

Who were the people that put the readings together?

How did they decide on the daily readings?

ANY BOOKS ON THE ABOVE QUESTIONS?

Thank you for your answers.

The Liturgy of the Word also comes from Jewish Sabbath worship in the Synagogue. There, the scriptures would be read and rabbis would teach (Jesus often does this in the Gospels). You also see this in Acts, where it describes going to the synagogue on the Sabbath to hear the Scriptures. Then would then assemble on the next day to break bread, which we call the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

I imagine the list of specific reading just evolved over time. I’m sure there’s a part of the Roman Curia that oversees this.

Hi Jim,

Who were the people that put the readings together?

There is I believe a commision in Rome that deals with these matters. I’ m sure the hierarchy was also consulted.

Thank you, Verbum

I am asking because the readings are beautifully placed together. They always reflect the levels of Scripture- i. e., literal, tropological, allegorical and anagogical. Perhaps it is the Holy Spirit Himself. The typology is beautifully proclaimed.

Again, thank you

If any person can direct me to a book or site, please do so.

Thank you
