How do Canadians get rid of bears?

My friend had a big Black bear in her yard trying to get into her dumpster. Her son fired a couple of shots into the air and it took off.

(She has many acres of land, so it was safe to do, for all that are worried.)

Any way that is some photo and I read what snoopes said. Still sad he was killed by a bear.
